REMIAM – Intelligent and High Multimedia Museums Network

Participation, sharing, full accessibility, and enjoyment are the guiding principles of the REMIAM project (REte Musei Intelligenti ad Avanzata Multimedialità, formerly OPS – Opere Parlanti Show). The project aims to enhance cultural accessibility to the museum and its surrounding territory through the “Museum Network” approach.

REMIAM (EX PON03PE_00161) is designed to develop a demonstrator prototype of the Museum Network and establish the foundations for an integrated strategy addressing the rich heritage of Campania’s museums.

Within the network, the new museum concept focuses on storytelling through technology, allowing artworks to “speak” to visitors. The goal is to move beyond mere observation toward a cultural, intellectual, and emotional experience that caters to diverse interests and needs.

Modern Internet of Things (IoT) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies will support this shift, providing a technological framework to enhance communication and understanding of the site’s knowledge.

The project adopts a multidisciplinary approach, aiming to design a new museum model where art, technology, innovative interaction methods, and communication techniques facilitate the transformation of traditional museums toward MUSEUMS 4.0.

REMIAM represents the redefinition of PON03PE_00161, formerly called OPS, ensuring full alignment with the guidelines defined in the RIS3 of the Campania Region.

Goals

The goal is to virtually break down the walls of museums, amplify their cultural message, and build dialogues with the wider world by leveraging the potential of modern technologies.

Through the Museum Network, the REMIAM project also aims to engage schools of all levels, by developing and promoting educational activities designed to increase knowledge of museum heritage.

The objective is to enhance and promote the educational mission of each individual museum through shared and coordinated cultural management at the territorial level. Virtual and interactive visits, gamification methodologies, and new interaction models are the technological tools that REMIAM intends to develop and implement to establish a strong connection with new generations experiencing a museum for the first time.

Within the broader context of promoting the territory surrounding the Museum Network, the project also seeks to support high-quality artisanal production, both existing initiatives and the development of new ones. Museums, therefore, “speak” with local craftsmanship, fostering new artistic production methods through the use of innovative technological tools such as modern 3D printers.

Subdivision

Three interconnected actions:

  • analysis of the museum heritage, for the creation of a Integrated System of Knowledge to enlarge the CHIS Platform;
  • realization of the Museum Network;
  • realization of the instruments for a social and sustainable usage in a virtual and augmented reality.

Research Output

The project is structured around three interconnected lines of action:

  • Analysis of museum heritage, aimed at creating an Integrated Knowledge System extending the scope of the CHIS platform;

  • Development of a Museum Network;

  • Creation of tools for Social and Sustainable Enjoyment through Augmented and Virtual Reality.
