CUEIM has signed an agreement with Greening The Island (GTI) to support self-sufficiency and sustainability of islands worldwide, strengthening cooperation among local authorities, business, citizens and academia.
The final scope of the agreement is to identify innovative solutions of “green economy” enabling the transition towards the “smart” paradigm.
The agreement arises from the need to face the environmental issues of the islands. Indeed, the islands are the most exposed to the effects of pollution and climate change, as repeatedly highlighted in the context of international debates, like the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21).
Even the special report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), debated during the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 24), shows the expected catastrophic scenarios by following the current rate of emissions: global warming reaching 1.5°C between 2030 and 2052, the rising sea level, the damage of the biodiversity, the decline of coral reefs, etc.
The necessary actions for islands range from the electric mobility to other innovative solutions linked to energy and the rational use of water, thus considering important sectors like tourism, agriculture and fishing.
CUEIM will coordinate the GTI Observatory section dedicated to Academia & Research Member in order to promote the collection and the dissemination of best practices of the islands worldwide.
